On Tuesday 9th December Aquinas Science department hosted Year 7 pupils from three of our local primary schools, Holy Rosary, St. Bernard’s and St. Michael’s. Ninety pupils spent the day in the science labs investigating the science of colour. Under the expert tuition of Ms. Byrne, Mr. Feron and Dr. Magill , the budding scientists were educated and enthused during 3 workshop sessions encompassing the disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.

This scheme provides opportunities for schools and companies to work together on a common theme. Each participating school is allocated a co-ordinating engineer by the school’s partner company. Aquinas Diocesan Grammar school team has been linked with The Royal Air Force, who provided us with a design brief which is a real-life problem.

On Friday 9th March, Year 13 Physics students (accompanied by Ms Byrne and Mr Ewart) attended two interactive lectures at QUB as part of the National Science and Engineering Week 07. The first lecture, entitled ‘Materials in the Living World, was delivered by Dr. Gregg of the Physics department at Queen’s. He enthralled the students with his innovative use of liquid nitrogen to freeze lettuce and to make some home-made ice-cream (the physics of phase-changing properties). He then turned his attention to superconductors and their temperature dependence to look at ’smart’ materials. The last lecture, ‘Million dollar Mathematics’ was delivered by Dr. Kim of the Mathematics department of QUB. It looked at using mathematics to predict changes in the share markets, reducing risk, options and forward contracts. It was a real crash-course for those students aspiring to a life on Wall Street. An enjoyable afternoon for all!
