Shakespeare Festival 08

Year 8 and 9, and year 13 took to the stage Friday, 12 December for the school’s annual Shakespeare Festival, opened by Mrs Press, in the assembly hall. The adjudicator for the day was our very own Ms Sheila Mc Connellogue, with Professor Mark Thorton-Burnett from Queen’s University lending  his assistance. Their comments to the audience at various intervals throughout the day left no doubt over the value of performing Shakespearean scenes for contemporary schools.

There was the usual eclectic range of themes and styles for the bard’s works and performances continue to go from strength to strength each year.
First to take the stage was 8F with an Hawaiian, light-hearted  version of the mechanical’s play in  ‘A Midsurfers’ Night’s Dream.’ Next we had 8L with their sleek Hollywood style ‘The Tempest’. 8M followed with their innovative nursery rhyme interpretation of  ‘Hamlet’ or ‘Hamwet’. 8S closed the first year performances with their hypnotic twist on Macbeth…Rumble in the Jungle.’

In the interval two A-level English classes shared their modern interpretation of the classic ‘Anthony and Cleopatra’ Before lunch two year 9 classes; 9D and 9E, gave two very entertaining performances of ‘Macbeth’ with ‘Mac Burger Royale’ and ‘Macbeth on the Street’.  The afternoon’s performances concluded with hilarious comedy in the form of 9M’ s Twelfth Night – Yellow Tights and Playtus Fights,’  and  9S  ‘Twelfth Night – Wild West Fest.’

Congratulations to all classes who should be very proud of their productions and well done to all the award winners of the day.
