Aquinas win shield in N.I. French Debate.

 

A’level French students Katie Sharkey (Captain), Conor Flaherty, Dermot Dignam and Aoife Devlin recently won the final of the QUB Nicilt French Debating competition held in the UU campus in Magee College, Derry, beating Lumen Christi College, Derry on the motion  ‘La libération des femmes n’a pas amélioré leur condition’. To qualify for the N.I.final, the team have been competing since October and have won their debates against previous winners Ballyclare High School, Methodist College Belfast and Antrim Grammar. The team reserves were Rose Goodall and Rachael Doran.  Dermot Dignam won an award for Best Speaker in the final and against Antrim Grammar, and Katie Sharkey both won two awards for Best Speaker against Methodist College and Ballyclare. The motions throughout the year debated various issues including the legalisation of drugs, the role of education in preparing young people for modern life and the issues surrounding sport today. All debates are conducted entirely in French.
