Aquinas participate in Bar Mock Trial

On Thursday 16th October 2008, year 13 pupils that are participating in the Bar Mock Trial competition and year 12 GCSE LLW pupils visited the Belfast High Court, hoping to gain a greater understanding of court procedures and the Northern Ireland legal system. Many pupils gained the opportunity to observe barristers and judges and, perhaps for some, see where their future career paths take them.
The first striking image of the trip came from the High Court itself. The truly spectacular front of the building provided us with the perfect entrance to the exquisite main hall, bustling with many busy barristers and others fulfilling their duties. This marvellous picture, however, was greatly contrasted with the grubby, grimy prison cells. Fortunately, everybody managed to leave without incident.
Pupils also were given the chance to meet The Honourable Lord Justice Weatherup. This provided them with a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the roles of a judge and how they contribute to the court procedures. It was a very informative talk that gave a greater understanding of the judge’s role.
Finally, the pupils were able to witness two real-life Bail Hearings. From this, the pupils were able witness how the average hearing was carries out and gain a better understanding of the finer intricacies of the court procedure. It also provided our aspiring barristers and future law students with the chance to witness experienced barristers and gain tips from them.
Overall, the general consensus amongst those who attended was that the day was an incredible success. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed it, learned a great amount about the legal system and even witness it first-hand.
The pupils would like to offer their sincerest thanks to the careers department and to others who made this day possible. We also extend our best wishes to the LLW GCSE students and wish the best of luck to the Bar Mock Trial Participants in November.
