A Level Specification

Advanced and Subsidiary Art & Design (CCEA) This course is designed to dovetail with GCSE and many of its elements mimic the format of that examination. Year 13 AS Level The AS Level builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills developed within GCSE Art and Design and requires each candidate to complete two coursework pieces (one Fine Art project and one Design project, as with GCSE) within Year 13. One of these final pieces must be within the area of 3D and the other within the area of 2D and each project must have an element of Historical or Critical Studies relating to the subject matter or development of the work. Candidates will be required to complete and Externally Set Assignment which will be issued during February of the year of examination. Year 14 Candidates studying GCE Advanced Level Art and Design will complete a Dissertation of 2000 - 4000 words before March of Year 14. The Dissertation will reflect interest or studies contained in the coursework units at either AS or at Advanced level. Each candidate must also complete one coursework piece during Year 14 and an Externally Set Assignment, which, similarly to GCSE and AS, will be issued in February of the examination year. Each project must have an element of Historical or Critical Studies relating to the subject matter or development of the work. They will be encouraged to explore and develop ideas and experiment with materials and techniques to generate original responses. A broad and flexible range of stimuli should be encountered allowing them, to respond to their personal interests and enthusiasm. It is expected that students will be involved in a continuous process of reassessment and evaluation. Pupils who are considering taking this course will have been well prepared by GCSE, have a keen interest in extending their abilities and show an open-minded attitude to new areas of experience. The study of Art and Design is especially useful for the following types of students: Those who will undertake further study in Art and Design, (possibly through a Foundation Course in Art and Design in an Art Collect attached to a University: Those who will study subjects or take up careers for which an Art and Design education is relevant: (Many Universities offer combined courses with Art e.g. Media Studies) Those who, while having an interest and aptitude in the subject, will benefit from the course yet are not intending to study the subject further; Career Opportunities Talented pupils intending to specialise in Art (Fine or Applied) may apply for a place in a Foundation Course in Art and Design in an Art College attached to a University. Many Universities are now offering combination courses with Art e.g. Media Studies.
