Home Economics aims to prepare young people for life in a consumer-oriented society. The syllabus is designed to provide a broad background of knowledge and skills related to Home Economics. It is an integrated field of study and is concerned with developing the skills of management and organisation of resources and the European dimension within health education. Students will become increasingly competent in a wide range of practical and investigational skills. There is no compulsory practical examination but students may choose to complete cookery practicals or investigations as part of their coursework activities. The specification also provides a variety of opportunities for developing and generating evidence of key skills.
SPECIFICATION
Northern Ireland (CCEA) - Advanced Subsidiary GCE (AS)
There are SIX modules consisting of:- 1. Principles of Nutrition
2. Diet and Health
3. Consumer Behaviour and Protection
4. Food Preservation, Production and
5. Lifestyle and Health
6. Coursework
AS Level consists of 3 modules (excluding coursework)
A Level consists of 3 modules (AS) and 3 modules including coursework.
Coursework - 30%
Students completing an A-Level in Home Economics will be required to complete a 3000 word report on a research based activity of their own choice within an area of study from the specification.
Specific Skills & Requirements
Students will be expected to:
a) recall social and scientific facts, principles and modern theory in relation to the specification.
b) show skill in applying theoretical knowledge to the use, the influences and functions of consumer buying behaviour.
c) appreciate the relationship of people to their environment.
d) investigate and evaluate relevant media information and materials to the specification.
e) recognise the social, moral and cultural values within Home Economics issues.
f) organise and present ideas in a clear and logical form using the appropriate terminology and ICT to enhance findings.
g) to place Home Economics in the context of today’s multicultural society.
Home Study At least one hour daily. This includes research, learning and written assignment. Students are also expected to read widely around nutrition topics in journals and magazines.
Career Opportunities
Home Economics provides a basis for those seeking employment in a wide range of careers such as industry, commerce and the Health & Social Services. It is a recognised and accepted qualification for entry to more advanced courses in Higher and Further Education. It may be studied at degree level leading to courses in Home Economics, Consumer Education, Environmental Sciences, Dietetics, Food Science, Product Development and Hospitality management. Successfully completed courses can lead to employment in education or as a professional Home Economist in the food or textiles industry. A qualification within Home Economics and a science either Biology or Chemistry can lead to a career within Dietetics. Most of the courses are available within Northern Ireland and are offered at Queens University or the Ulster University.
