Home Economics (NICCEA)
The syllabus builds upon the work pupils have been involved with in K.S.3. Home Economics lessons. The emphasis in K.S.4. is on the diet and health. It is hoped that pupils will have a greater knowledge and understanding of nutrition and holistic health.
Topics for investigation include obesity, CHD, anorexia, bulimia, dental caries and osteoporosis. Pupils will also explore recent topics including BSE. GM foods and irradiation.
Coursework
Coursework is divided into two parts and it is set by CCEA. It involves a case study situation which is the same for both tiers of entry. Each pupil will complete a written project of approximately 2500 words. They will then have a practical exam lasting approximately two hours. The practical is related to the case study and the pupils will choose their own dishes to cook. The pupil’s teacher assesses both elements and together they account for 50%.
Coursework = 50% i.e. practical assessment
written project
Examination = 50% 1 written paper
There are two tiers of entry:
Foundation Tier targets grades C - G
Higher Tier targets grades A*- D
