It is planned that pupils will study the EDEXCEL modular specification for A level Mathematics.
From a choice of modules, six are studied, three of which must be in Pure Mathematics. The remaining three are made up by a Mechanics and Statistics combination.
The Modules examined at the end of Lower Sixth are:
Pure Mathematic 1 (P1)
Pure Mathematic 2 (P2) and
Mechanics 1 (M1)
Those examined at the end of the Upper Sixth are:
Pure Mathematics 3 (P3)
Mechanics (M2) and
Statistics 1 (S1)
There is no coursework element in this syllabus.
It is strongly recommended that a pupil should have at least a Grade B in GCSE Additional Mathematics and Grade A* in GCSE Higher Tier Mathematics before embarking on this course.
This aims of the course include enabling pupils to:
(i) develop their understanding and enjoyment of mathematics
(ii) understand the relationship between “real world” problems and possible mathematical models
(iii) take increasing responsibility for their own learning and the evaluation of their own mathematical development
A level Mathematics is an appropriate option for those pupils wishing to pursue a career or further study in a medical, educational, scientific, technological, engineering field or social science fields.
