GCSE Specifications

GCSE Music is set in two components.

1. THE COURSEWORK COMPONENT

a) PERFORMING 30%
All Candidates perform a solo part or piece of music.
All Candidates will either perform an individual part in an ensemble or rehearse and direct an ensemble. (May of Year 12)

b) COMPOSING 30%
All Candidates will submit a file of their best compositions consisting of 2 pieces lasting a total of 3 minutes.
The compositions must be accompanied by a commentary showing how the intentions of the piece have been realised. (Submitted end of February of Year 12)

2. THE TERMINAL WRITTEN PAPER 40%

This is taken by candidates at the end of the course. The questions will relate to recorded excerpts, given on the examination tape and drawn from a wide range of music, popular, classical, rock and traditional music. (Exam in May)

CAREERS

The following careers are possible through studying music.

Sound Engineering -job opportunities in media, TV, Radio, Concert Venues, Festival Venues, Theatre, Dance production and electro-acoustic composition.

Music Education - job opportunities in classroom, music teaching, instrumental peripatetic teaching, music therapy in special schools.

Arts Administration - general arts administration prefer people with a background in the performing arts. Arts administration has job opportunities in Arts Centres, Concert Halls, Theatres, Ballet-Companies, Orchestral Managers.

Music Therapy - job opportunities in health service as music therapy is now recognised as a medical aid in hospitals with a range of patients e.g. the disabled, mentally ill, autistic, physically handicapped, children and elderly.

Performing - orchestras, pop groups, big bands, choirs, opera quartets, solo work, shows and musicals.
