The A level Physical Education course will be based on the Oxford and Cambridge Syllabus. The course takes a multi disciplinary approach encouraging the development of different methods of enquiry with the focal point being the performer and the performance. The course is based on the interaction between the theory and practice of Physical Education.
Examination Structure
Advanced Subsidiary GCE (AS Level)
UNIT 1; Factors Affecting Performance
This module has 2 sections. Section A: application of anatomical and physiological knowledge to improve performance; Section B: aquiring, performing and teaching movement skills. Examination: four compulsory questions.
UNIT 2; Contemporary Studies
Apply knowledge and understanding of PE/Sport as a whole, to its role in modern society. Examination: two compulsory questions
UNIT 3; Performance and its Improvement Through Critical Analysis
Assessed in two practical activities. Complete a Personal Performance Portfolio.
To gain a certificate for advanced GCE the above 3 AS units, together with 2 A2 limits complete the matrix of “A” Level Physical Education.
A2 Units
A2 Unit 1: Four options exist from Historical Studies in PE, Comparative Studies in PE. Biomechanical analysis and psychology of sport. Two of these options must be studied, including at least one of History or Comparative Studies.
A2 Unit 2: Section A - Exercise and Sport physiology and the response of the body to performance and training. Section B - Synoptic Assessment. This examines the candidates ability to bring together knowledge of principles and concepts across a range of study areas.
A2 UNIT3: The improvement of effective performance and critical evaluation of practical activities with synoptic application. The candidate will be assessed in two practical activities. The candidate will be assessed both practically and orally
Specific Skills and Requirements
Pupils need to have a strong science background with particular emphasis on human biology. A strong background in more than one sport (playing at least one of the sports at club level) is extremely important. A high fitness level and a genuine love of sport, allied with a willingness to sacrifice a lot of personal time is vital for this A level.
Independent Study at Home
The reading of sports articles in magazines and newspapers along with the constant reading of the textbooks provided is necessary. A continuous regime of fitness training and skills improvement in each of the 2 sports at home is crucial for achievement in this subject.
Career Implications and Opportunities
This A level leads directly into the expanding leisure, fitness and health industries. Career possibilities include teaching, leisure management, fitness advising (personal and general), physiotherapy, sports therapy and many other sports and health related jobs.
