The intention throughout the course is to integrate the theoretical and practical aspects of the subject to ensure candidates understand the interrelated nature of knowledge and experience in influencing participation in physical activity.
The course provides students with the opportunity to become informed and competent participants in physical activity through the knowledge and understanding of the principles pertaining to effective performance and intrinsic value of physical activity in society.
Component 1: Terminal Examination
Candidates must be entered for one tier only. The Terminal Examination will comprise one written paper. Paper 1 (1 hour 30 minutes). The written examinations accounts for 30% The syllabus comprises of two interrelated areas of study:-
(1) Factor affecting participation and performance
(2) Relationship between health, fitness and practical activity and risk assessment in physical assessment.
Component 2: Individual Performance in Physical Assessment
Practical activities and course work assignments accounts for 50%. Candidates are assessed internally by the teacher and moderated externally by CCEA.
Assessment is based on the candidates exercise/activity profiles, and on three activities chosen from given categories. Assessment will be against the criteria for individual performance in the physical activity. The categories for physical activities are:-
Athletic activities, Dance activities, Games activities, Gymnastics, Outdoor adventure activities and Water activities.
Component 3: Analysis and Improvement of Performance in Physical Activities (20%)
Assessment is based on the candidates’ ability to analyse performances and to plan, imploy, monitor and review action plans to improve the quality and effectiveness of their own or anothers performances in identical areas.
It is worth emphasising that the practical element accounts for 70% of the total marks. It is recommended that the candidate is competent at team games, an able swimmer, and maintains a good level of fitness. Candidates are required to review critically the performance of themselves and others on a reciprocal basis in all practical activities.
