The aim of the Religious Studies programme is to offer students the opportunity to study religion through literary and historical approaches. This will be carried out through the study of Biblical Literature; the Development of the Christian Church, world religions and ideologies. The syllabus in Religious Studies has been designed to promote an enquiring, critical and sympathetic approach to the study of religion.
A level Religious Studies students will be required to demonstrate:
· an ability to understand the language, terms and concepts of religion
· an ability to present relevant factual information in an organised and coherent manner
· an ability to understand the ways in which beliefs are related to the personal and corporate practice of religion in history
· an ability to recognise and appreciate the contribution of religion in the formation of diverse patterns of beliefs and behaviour.
· an ability to make critical assessments of issues, beliefs and practices arising out of their study of this subject.

· have a good command of English
· enjoy active participation in discussion
· be able to make effective use of relevant factual knowledge
· display the ability to express awareness of change and continuity in the past

Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Examination: The examination will consist of two papers lasting 1 hour and 20 mins.
The modules offered at AS Level are
1. Study of the Old Testament and its prophets.
2. The History of the Celtic Church
Advanced GCE (A2)
At A2 there is a continued, in-depth study of the modules mentioned above.
At both levels, AS and A2 there is an internal assessment which will incorporate both modules. At AS this takes the form of coursework . At A2 it takes the form of a third exam paper.
Essential requirements for entry to the A Level Religious Studies Course:
Consistently good performances in assessments, coursework and examinations throughout years 11 and 12.
At least Grade B or above in the NEAB examination and high coursework banding.

The study of A level Religion provides students with the opportunity to develop many skills which are vital for today’s world. These skills include the ability to discuss, evaluate, explore, make fair and untested judgements and appreciate and respect different opinions.
